Our Greatest Exposure to Water-Born Contamination is in the Shower – Not at the Sink.

Scientists and studies all over the world have concluded that our exposure to toxins in the water are far greater in the shower or bath than commonly believed. Exposure to regulated contaminants and toxins like disinfectant byproducts (trihalomethanes) and PFAs as well as ammonia in chloramine is estimated to be 20-100 times greater in the shower versus drinking the water. This fact is sadly unaddressed by today’s water systems industry.

Why is the shower exposure to toxins so much greater versus what we drink?

Many chemicals like chlorine get into our bloodstream and bodies very efficiently through shower water because the shower provides the ideal venue. The warm shower expands the skin’s pores and therefore permits a high rate of absorption of chlorine and other harmful contaminants

With our skin being the largest organ and our lungs the most direct pathway to our bloodstream, absorption and inhalation of toxins while showering bypass our bodies natural filtration performed by our liver and kidneys.

Many contaminants are unstable and naturally release into the steam and vapor of the shower. Many of the regulated contaminants like trihalomethanes and PFAs readily pass through our skin and into our bloodstream as well as concentrating in the vapor for our inhalation.

What else in the water are we exposed to in the shower?

Water is nature’s solvent. Its’ main purpose is to highly dissolve the essential minerals in the ground and make them bioavailable to all life forms. For instance, we can receive up to 20% of our daily calcium and magnesium needs with one shower as these healthy ions pass through our largest organ – our skin.

Unfortunately, water dissolves almost everything; and almost everything is landfilled or flushed down the toilet where it is then highly dissolved. Once something like PFAs are highly dissolved from the carpets, furniture, clothing, etc. thrown in the landfill they make it into the vast underground water table. This water table network is what supplies our town’s water sources of wells and even reservoirs.

The same process exists with what we flush down the toilet such as pharmaceuticals or other chemicals.

Town water departments are not charged with removing any of the hundreds of toxins that are present. They are charged with staying in compliance with around 4 contaminants while providing hopefully non-corrosive water that has been disinfected with chlorine or chloramine to kill bacteria and other pathogens.

Healthy water is rarer than gold – Sadly, almost no one has it.

Water is our most basic element essential for survival. Healthy water is vital to maintain the proper functioning of our bodies, maintain skin and organ integrity, and support a healthy immune system for longevity.

Why is today’s water system industry largely incapable of providing healthy shower water?

All larger system providers and installers are founded on providing legacy water softener and reverse osmosis systems. These two components still make up north of 90% of industry revenues. It has been this way since the 1940s with water softeners and the 1970s with reverse osmosis. These systems address what one can see the healthy minerals are doing by nature. Minerals have a positive charge and by nature stick to metal – particularly hot metal. Prolonged contact with metal creates a reaction called corrosion. Corrosion causes appliances and fixtures to fail. Minerals change color when exposed to air and can cause staining.

Removing only the healthy essential minerals to protect the appliance manufacturer’s warranty exposure is the big business. Every house has water, all water desires to have a 7.5 PH and healthy minerals, all houses have appliances and fixtures, and the health of the water is the enemy to those appliances and fixtures. A company can sell the same softener to every house, whether on well or town water, not worry about having to maintaining the system, and sell a reverse osmosis system to provide drinking water without the unhealthy levels of sodium introduced by the softening process.

This is not a healthy water solution. Notice that the health of the water is removed at the point of entry with a softener, unhealthy levels of sodium are added, and no contaminants are reduced. Unknowingly, customers are not receiving the healthy dose of essential minerals in the shower but getting the full dose of contamination of what is in the water. The reverse osmosis system installed at the kitchen sink does nothing for you in the shower where you need healthy water the most.

Online companies selling whole house systems like Aquasana, Pelican, Halo, Titan sell the term “reduction” or the more trendy “total reduction” aspect of performance. These are disposable systems that have no ongoing performance proof because they can only reduce exposure for several months at most. These companies claim 10 year /no maintenance offerings that simply can’t be supported because of the totally inadequate amount of carbon surface area available.
